Your Internet World (TM) World Wide Web Yellow Pages includes a special electronic edition of this reference on CD-ROM by Modern Age Books. Once you have properly installed the electronic Internet World (TM) World Wide Web Yellow Pages on your system, you can use the powerful Modern Age software to search for newsgroups, Web sites, gophers, mailing lists and other resources off-line (avoiding phone and on-line service charges), and then, with a single click of your mouse, connect directly to the site of your choice using the special integrated version of the Quarterdeck Mosaic browser.
This readme file supplements the information found in your Internet World (TM) World Wide Web Yellow Pages on how to install and use the CD-ROM. This file will be updated from time to time. The latest copy can always be found at http://www.idgprogrammer.com.

System Requirements:
The Internet World World Wide Web Yellow Pages CD-ROM will run on any of the following computers: a Macintosh, Macintosh Powerbook or PowerPC Macintosh with System 7 or higher (8MB RAM), a PC with Microsoft Windows 3.1, 3.11, or Windows 95 (8MB RAM). You can install the entire book (18MB) on your hard drive for best performance or run it from the CD to conserve hard drive space. Other requirements include:
Ñ A modem (9600 baud minimum, 14,400 or faster recommended), or a connection to the Internet via a Local Area Network.
Ñ A TCP/IP driver (sometimes called a "stack" or "dialer" to make the connection to the Internet. The latest versions of the Macintosh and Windows operating system (Macintosh Version 7.5 and Windows 95) include TCP/IP stacks. With earlier versions, TCP/IP software must be installed. The World Wide Web Yellow Pages installation program includes all necessary software for getting connected.
Ñ A dial-up (SLIP or PPP) account with an Internet Service Provider, a company that provides you access to the Internet, or a direct connection to the Internet, typically available in a Corporate environment via a Local Area Network (LAN). If you do not currently have an Internet account, you can use Quarterdeck's Connection Helper during installation to easily subscribe to one in minutes, or use the included contact information to establish an account with one of many alternative providers.
Installation:
To use the special Internet World (TM) World Wide Web Yellow Pages CD, you must first install it on your system. The installation program completes its work in two steps: first, it installs the Modern Age Books edition of the Internet World (TM) World Wide Web Yellow Pages, and then it installs the integrated Quarterdeck Mosaic browser.
During installation of the browser you will be given an opportunity to choose your preferred method for accessing the Internet. If you do not already have an Internet access account, you will be offered the opportunity to subscribe to one or more national providers.
If you plan to use Quarterdeck Mosaic over a modem, you need to know what kind of modem you have and which com port it uses. If you already have an Internet account, you also need to know your username and password. You may want to note this information below for handy reference:

The Connection Helper, which will display during installation, contains a database of information about dozens of Internet Service Providers. If you already have a provider and it is not included in the database that is listed in the connection helper, you will need some or all of the following additional information (which you can obtain from your provider):

To install your Internet World (TM) World Wide Web Yellow Pages, please choose the procedure below that matches for your system. When you have finished, choose EXIT on the final Quarterdeck Mosaic installation screen and proceed to Getting Started, below. If you find you lack information requested by the Quarterdeck program, you can terminate the installation at any point, and start over at a later time.

Windows 3.x Users
Ñ Insert the CD-ROM into your CD drive.
Ñ From Program Manager, choose RUN from the file menu.
Ñ Type d:\install.exe (or the appropriate drive letter) and press ENTER.
Ñ Follow the on-screen instructions.
Windows 95 Users
Ñ Insert the CD-ROM into your CD drive.
Ñ From the START menu choose SETTINGS, then choose CONTROL PANEL.
Ñ Go to ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS, then INSTALL.

Getting Started
Choose one of the following procedures to start your Modern Age Books electronic version of the Internet World (TM) World Wide Web Yellow Pages:
Windows 3.x Users
From the Program Manager, open the MAB (Modern Age Books) program group. Double click the book icon to start the World Wide Web Yellow Pages.
Windows 95 Users
Click the Start button, and then point to Programs. Point to Modern Age Books and click the book icon to start the World Wide Web Yellow Pages.
Macintosh Users
Double click on the book icon to start the World Wide Web Yellow Pages.
Once you have launched your copy of the Internet World (TM) World Wide Web Yellow Pages, we recommend that you test the integrated Quarterdeck Mosaic browser by registering your book at the official IDG Books world wide web site. Registering will assure that you receive information about your free update as well as other product information. To do so:
Ñ Click on the Registration tab of the World Wide Web Yellow Pages. This action brings up the World Wide Web Yellow Pages Registration page on your screen.
Ñ Click on the Registration address (URL), which appears in green. This action launches the Quarterdeck Mosaic browser and connects you to the IDG Books registration home page.
Ñ Click on the World Wide Web Yellow Pages registration button and follow directions.

Help
On-line help and documentation is available at all times from the Menu Bar. Whenever you need more information about a feature of your book, click first on Help.
Search Button
The Search button invokes a dialog box that allows you to search for information anywhere in the electronic book using keywords, character strings, or Boolean operators (AND, OR, NOT) to refine your search. Proximity searching allows you to look for related words likely to appear in the same context, but not necessarily together.
Direct Internet Connect Feature
Once you have located a Web site, gopher, newsgroup, telnet address or other resource with the search engine, you can jump to the resource directly by clicking on its address with your mouse and launching the Quarterdeck browser. This action takes you directly to the site. Once there, follow directions.
Ñ For list-server sites, type in the subscriber information requested before sending the message.
Ñ The Quarterdeck Mosaic browser does not support telnet or WAIS sites. See the FAQs, below, for further information.
Once you launch the Quarterdeck Mosaic browser, you remain connected to the Internet until you Quit (Macintosh) or Exit (PC) via the browser File menu. Quitting or exiting from the Internet World (TM) World Wide Web Yellow Pages themselves does not close the browser.
While the browser is active, you may return to the Yellow Pages at any time to search for additional resources. Clicking on a new address returns you to the Quarterdeck Mosaic browser and the site that you have selected.
After you have finished your on-line work, close the browser by selecting Quit (Macintosh) or Exit (PC) from the File menu of the browser. Some services (such as CompuServe) require that you close a Dialer or Winsock program as well in order to completely disconnect.
NetFind Tab
If you can't find what you are looking for in your electronic edition of the Internet World (TM) World Wide Web Yellow Pages, go to the special NetFind section of the book, and try one of the eleven search engines listed there, including Yahoo, WebCrawler, Lycos and more. To jump to the search engine of your choice, simply click on its address with your mouse.
Annotation Icon
An annotation icon (paperclip), located in the lower right-hand corner of your screen, is available for adding notes to your electronic World Wide Web Yellow Pages. Drag this icon to a location next to a resource name and enter your information.
Bookmarks
Yellow, numbered bookmarks will appear at the top of the book whenever you place a bookmark. A descriptive listing of each bookmark will appear in a drop-down menu when you click on the Bookmark command in the menu bar.
Font Size Slider
For your reading comfort, adjust the size of the type on the page from 50% of normal size to 150% of normal size. To adjust size of type, place your cursor arrow over the slider icon at the lower left corner of the page. Click and hold down the mouse button dragging the slider left to reduce type size. Drag slider right to increase size of type.
Index Button
The Index Button displays an alphabetical index of all topics contained in the electronic book. Typing the first letter of a word or topic heading brings you to that point in the list. Click on the OK button when a topic of interest is highlighted.
Go Back Button
Clicking the Go Back Button returns you to the previous screen. Repeatedly clicking on this button will return you to your starting point.
History Button
Up to 40 visited topics, during a session, are automatically recorded off-screen as you progress through the book. To revisit a topic, highlight the listing and click on the Go To button
User Definition
Define an unlimited amount of users so each user will be able to customize sessions, annotations, and bookmarks. Once a site has been visited by a user the address color will change so tracking will be automatic for each individual user.
Special Features: Quarterdeck Mosaic Browser
Toolbar
The Toolbar is a row of buttons at the top of the Quarterdeck Mosaic browser display that give you quick access to frequently performed tasks.
Toolbar Animation
At the right end of the Toolbar is a graphic image. When Quarterdeck Mosaic is communicating with a remote site or loading a document from your local drive, the image becomes animated. When the animation stops, the program is no longer performing network activity.
Desktop
The largest area of Quarterdeck Mosaic's display is taken up by the desktop, a large, empty area in which documents are displayed.
Browser Windows
Documents are displayed in standard, moveable, resizable windows in the desktop area of the screen. Documents can be maximized, in which case each document covers the entire Quarterdeck Mosaic desktop area.
Help
On-line help and documentation is available at all times from the Menu Bar. Whenever you need more information about a feature of the Quarterdeck Mosaic browser, click first on Help on the Toolbar.
URL Helper
A URL Helper Button appears in the main browser window. You use it to call the URL Helper dialog box, a special tool provided by Quarterdeck to help you construct syntactically correct ("legal")URLs by providing a template from which to work, along with ample help.
Hotlists Button
This button saves the address (URL) of the document currently displayed in the browser window to the currently selected hotlist.
Annotations
Quarterdeck Mosaic lets you add personal notes to a document as you view it and save those comments to a file on your system. Your comments, called annotations, can then be viewed and edited any time you view the associated document. Consult Help for further details.
Status Bar
Along the bottom of the program display is the Status Bar. Quarterdeck Mosaic uses this area to keep you informed about tasks being performed. The left side of the bar describes user activity, while the right side details network activity, such as attempts to connect to sites or the transferring of documents.
Saving Documents to Disk
You can save any document that you access on the Web to your local hard drive or a drive accessible to you over a local area network. Select SAVE AS from the FILE menu and enter the necessary information. For further details, consult HELP.
Printing Documents
To print the document in the current browser window, select PRINT from the FILE menu. For further details, consult HELP.
FAQs
The Internet and the software that supports it are still too new to offer the reliability and predictability that we have come to expect from our desktop operating systems. In a recent Wall Street Journal column, Walter Mossberg observed that the rush to the Internet has "exposed a whole new series of complicated issues, including tricky problems configuring communications software and frequent indecipherable messages on the Net itself" (WSJ, October 19, 1995). The stacks and dialers needed to connect to the Internet sometimes compete with one another. Site addresses are often more arcane than those needed to access files under the DOS operating system. Site addresses change daily, as older sites move or close down, and as new ones appear. So it goes.
Until the Internet becomes a more mature operating environment, it is best to approach it with an experimental, wary, and open mind, as a traveler entering a new country or a weekend hobbyist trying out a new set of tools. Though your Modern Age Book and Quarterdeck Mosaic browser have been thoroughly tested, it is devilishly impossible to predict how they will work with all configurations and all Internet sites. What follows are solutions to some common "gotchas".
"What if I supply wrong or incomplete information, or otherwise mess up the installation?"
That's easy: either back-up to the incomplete or erroneous screen and correct it, or start over again. You can "back up" to an earlier installation screen by clicking on the Back button, or you can quit the installation altogether by clicking on the Cancel button. Your system will suffer no harm. When you are ready to try again, simply repeat the installation steps described above (see Installation).
"What if I want to change my Internet provider?"
Run the Location Manager program and enter the information it requests about your new provider. You will be connected to your new provider the next time you launch the Quarterdeck Mosaic browser.
"My Winsock program failed to connect me to the Internet, but the Quarterdeck Mosaic browser launched anyway. What should I do?"
This is a common occurrence which could be the result of temporary problems with your phone line, a busy network, or a busy provider. Close the browser by choosing Exit or Quit from the browser File menu. Try connecting to the Internet again by clicking on the same address.
"What if I already use CompuServe's NetLauncher for Windows Software?"
CompuServe Information Service (CIS) provides direct access to the Internet through its NetLauncher software. Once NetLauncher and its version of Winsock are properly installed on your computer, you can use your electronic World Wide Web Yellow Pages and Quarterdeck Mosaic browser with your CIS account. First, however, you will need to set up Quarterdeck Mosaic to use the NetLauncher Winsock. To do so, choose the LAN or other Winsock option when asked to select a service provider. In this situation, you need to provide much less information than when installing the Quarterdeck Winsock (QWINSOCK), typically just the information on your mail, news, and/or proxy servers.
Once you have completed installation of your World Wide Web Yellow Pages and Quarterdeck Mosaic browser, just click on any address with your mouse. The book will first launch NetLauncher, which will connect you to the Internet. Once the connection is complete, your World Wide Web Yellow Pages launches the Quarterdeck Mosaic browser.
"What if I already use Netcom's NetCruiser for Windows Software?"
Netcom offers its customers a type of account called NetCruiser. The NetCruiser software includes a Netcom-specific Winsock driver called NETCOMWS.DLL and a Web browser. You can use your electronic World Wide Web Yellow Pages and Quarterdeck Mosaic browser with your NetCruiser account. . First, however, you must have the version of Netcom NETCOMWS.DLL that ships with Netcom version 2.0 (expected to be available after August, 1995). Use NetCruiser's "File/Download new version" option to update your software. You'll also need to set up Quarterdeck Mosaic to use the NetLauncher Winsock. To do so, choose the LAN or other Winsock option when asked to select a service provider. In this situation, you need to provide much less information than when installing the Quarterdeck Winsock (QWINSOCK), typically just the information on your mail, news, and/or proxy servers.
"Why can't I access telnet or WAIS sites?"
The Quarterdeck Mosaic browser does not support telnet or WAIS sites. To obtain this functionality, try one of the following options:
Ñ Upgrade to Quarterdeck's InternetSuite, which supports both the WAIS and telnet protocols.
Ñ Download a freeware or shareware telnet program from the Internet itself and install it on your system. One of the best sites for Internet programs is: http://cwsapps.texas.net.
"Why can't I access newsgroups?"
Your Quarterdeck Mosaic browser includes a newsgroup reader, but your ability to read the articles in a particular newsgroup depends on your provider's news server. Your problem could be due to one of the following circumstances:
Ñ Your provider does not offer access to the newsgroup in question. A few services limit access to so-called adult and other newsgroups. Call your provider for further information.
Ñ Your provider does not offer a news server (not likely these days). Call your provider for further information. Remember to ask for the name of the news server so you can provide it to Location Manager.
Ñ You did not tell Quarterdeck the name of your provider's news server during installation by completing the NNTP Server field on the Mail/News page Location Manager. To configure Location Manager, select Configure Network from the Tools menu. Help is available from any screen by clicking Help or pressing F1.
Note that many NNTP servers have names with the "news." followed by the domain name, such as "news.compuserve.com", or "news.provider.net". For further details, ask your network administrator or Internet service provider.
"What if I'm using the new Macintosh Operating System 7.5.2?"
The Problem:
Installation problems with the new TCP/IP Protocol Stack have occurred with Quarterdeck Mosaic 2.1 on Macintosh Systems running System 7.5.2.
Installing the Quarterdeck Mosaic software onto a system with System 7.5.2 (with the Easy Install option, not custom) loads the older version of the TCP/IP stack Control Panel called MacTCP.
System 7.5.2 comes preloaded with a new version of the stack called TCP/IP.
Results of the Installation:
After the installation, BOTH stacks are loaded into the Control Panels folder on the Mac. When the system is restarted (as required after installation) the Mac warns the user that there are now two TCP/IP stacks loaded in the system and one of them needs to be removed.
Solution:
Users with System 7.5.2 who want to use the current version of Qmosaic must do the following;
1. Install Qmosaic
2. Disable the new TCP stack called TCP/IP, leaving the old one called MacTCP running.
3. Configure MacTCP. This procedure is necessary to establish dial-up Internet access for the first time.
4. Once connected to the Internet, run the World Wide Web Yellow Pages and select any URL.
